The NDP on Marijuana
Justin Trudeau’s push towards legalizing the recreational use of marijuana has done little to change the NDP’s longstanding views on the subject.
Per Tom Mulcair: “The NDP for 40 years has believed that it makes no sense at all for a person to have a criminal record for possession or personal use of a small amount of marijuana.” While their views are not entirely aligned, it would seem that the NDP is fully onboard to at least decriminalize marijuana in Canada.
Some of the key NDP marijuana policy considerations to take into account are:
- Their belief that the use of marijuana should be a personal choice
- Further research into the impact of cannabis on health is required
- Decriminalizing cannabis should be a priority, as opposed to legalization
