Health Benefits of Marijuana

Marijuana prohibition in Canada began in 1923, lasting 76 years before finally becoming legal to use for medicinal purposes again in 1999. As such, there exists a substantial gap in quality and controlled research on the potential medical benefits of cannabis.

What we have established, however, is marijuana’s ability to interact with the endocannabinoid system found within the human body. These interactions play a crucial role in how the body and mind perceive pain and access the brain’s reward centre, which can be directly linked to an individual’s level of happiness, their appetite, and their overall mood. Understanding these interactions is important, as they may be connected to many of the conditions or symptoms a user may be trying to alleviate with cannabis.

Medical Marijuana for Pain

Many patients have turned to medical marijuana for pain relief in lieu of pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory or pain killing drugs.  As a natural alternative, marijuana benefits individuals in that it does not introduce as many harmful substances to your system, while lowering the likelihood of dependency.

Reasons for medical cannabis use include the relief of chronic back pain, migraines and painful muscle spasms.  For a more comprehensive list of pain relief applications, please follow the link below.

Diseases Treated with Medical Cannabis

To begin, we should note that medical marihuana health benefits in this category are not to be confused with a cure.  Reasons for medical cannabis prescriptions often centre around alleviating the symptoms of a disease, or handling the side effects of the current treatment method. An example of this might be to help a patient combat the fatigue and nausea associated with chemotherapy.

The health benefits of marijuana may also extend to patients with Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease and Lupus, to name a few. For more on diseases treated with medical cannabis, follow the link below.

Bodily Interaction

Your body naturally produces and processes endocannabinoids. As such, there exists a network of cannabinoid receptors within portions of your brain and other parts of your body.  This network is called the endocannabinoid system, and it plays a vital role in how the cannabinoids found within marijuana, such as THC and CBD, create the effects commonly associated with marijuana use.

It begins when the THC or CBD contents of marijuana bind themselves to these receptors. Once bound, the brain responds by sending various chemical signals known as neurotransmitters. Each signal can affect a different portion of the body or mind, causing a different reaction.  It is within these reactions that the health benefits of marijuana can be found.

THC primarily binds to CB1 receptors, making it responsible for the psychoactive effects of marijuana (the sensation of being high).  This type of interaction connects weed use to the behavioural and mood altering benefits of cannabis. CBD has been linked more to the interaction between marijuana and CB2 receptors. As such, it is regarded as being responsible for more of the pain relief and anti-inflammatory health benefits of marijuana.
