What Is Budder?
Budder is a highly potent type of extract, first created and manufactured by Budderking, in Surrey, British Columbia, in 2004. Containing an enormously high THC content, budder is made by extracting cannabinoids from the cannabis plant using solvents or ice water. The end product has the texture of butter one might find at the grocery store. It can be dabbed, smoked, vaped, twaxed or used in an edible recipe. Budder can be gold or greenish brown in colour. Connoisseurs say that the blonder and smoother it is, the better. Budder is ideally stored in rooms that are between 10-21 degrees Celsius, as it may harden or liquefy depending on the temperature.
Budder Benefits
With a high that typically lasts between four to six hours, frequent users describe the experience as cerebral, relaxing and euphoric. Additionally, reports of “couch-lock” and grogginess are minimal, making this extract that much more appealing. Unlike shatter, budder also tends to retain more terpenes (the fragrant oils found in the cannabis plant, making it more flavourful.
Solvent Extraction Method
When extracted with C02 or butane, the chemical solvents blast through the marijuana plant to extract the THC. The THC is then purged when heat and air pressure remove the solvent. Extracted cannabinoids begin to crystallize as they are agitated during this process. Purging the THC at a very high temperature or whipping it like a batter will result in the smooth waxy texture budder is known for.
Breaking Budder
For rookie users, it is advised that they do not try this extraction method at home. It is so dangerous, in fact, that in the State of Colorado, they’ve banned butane and other explosive solvents from being used in the extraction process.
Due to the high level of psychoactive THC in its volume, budder is among the most potent cannabis products. Dr. Paul Hornby, a plant analyst at Hedron Analytical Inc (a company that tests cannabis for purity and potency) had this to say: “The best dried marijuana typically maxes out at about 27% THC. Solvent extracted products usually have more THC than bud, water hash or sieved hash, but none have tested as high as budder at up to 99.6% pure.”
One of the barriers of use is the high cost of the product. With prices reaching upwards of $79/gram, budder isn’t something the average user would likely purchase on a regular basis. While the price-tag is certainly high, it is also understandable, given the amount of cannabis required to produce budder. To make three grams of budder, it typically requires twenty-eight grams of cannabis plant.
All in all, budder is a recommended choice for the experienced cannabis user looking to take their high to the next level. For rookie or underage users, abstinence may be best due to the high cost, high potency and extreme danger of butane-based home extraction methods.
