What Does Stoned Mean?
“Stoned” is a slang term that refers to being under the influence of one or more drugs. The drug in question is usually weed, but it might also be a different drug (or, according to some people, alcohol). The term relates especially to mind-altering drugs. The slang-based website Urban Dictionary offers the following definition:
“A state of mind which occurs after smoking enough marijuana to the point where the user stares blankly into whatever catches his/her attention”
Many people use the term only when referring to the effects of a considerable amount of weed, while others may use it to describe any drug use. Some marijuana users believe that the term “stoned” comes from a feeling of heaviness that comes with smoking certain weed strains. After smoking, a person’s limbs may feel heavy, like stones. The first known use of the word “stoned” was in 1952.
Getting stoned on marijuana is often associated with bloodshot eyes, increased appetite, especially for junk food (this is called “the munchies,”) fits of laughter, increased interest in music and television, a lack of motivation, and feelings of relaxation. People also experience tactile hallucinations and feelings of euphoria. Being stoned may also lead to less pleasant feelings such as paranoia or anxiety.
There are many slang terms related to being under the influence of drugs. These include stoned, high, blasted, loaded, blitzed, bombed, hopped-up, ripped, spaced, strung out, wasted (more commonly for alcohol,) zonked, and spaced out.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “stoned” can also refer to being under the influence of alcohol. However, in modern usage, “stoned” is much more likely to refer to drugs than alcohol. Be careful when using the term “stoned” in mixed company, as it strongly implies the use of illegal drugs.
Here are some examples of phrases using the word “stoned:”
“Let’s go get stoned.”
“I’m so stoned right now.”
“You were so stoned yesterday that you thought you were floating”
