Do I Qualify For Medical Marijuana?
As of August 24th, 2016 thousands of Canadians have been federally licensed to access medicinal marijuana through the ACMPR (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations). With these regulations in place, Health Canada outlines a series of steps for obtaining cannabis.
Step 1: Consult with a health care practitioner
Under ACMPR a health care practitioner includes a physician or nurse from any province or territory. If your health care practitioner writes you a prescription, you are legally permitted to get marijuana.
Medicinal marijuana is used to treat a wide range of conditions like:
ADD/ADHD, Alzheimer’s Disease, Anxiety, Arthritis, Auto Accidents, Back & Neck Problems, Brain Injury, Cancer, Chronic Nausea, Chronic Pain, Colitis, Crohn’s Disease, Depression, Eating Disorders, Epilepsy, Fibromyalgia, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Kidney Failure/Dialysis, Migraines, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscle Spasms, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson’s Disease, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Severe Arthritis, Sexual Dysfunction, Sleep Disorders, Spinal Cord Injury/Disease.
If you suffer from one of the above symptoms the chances are greater that your doctor will write you a prescription.
Step 2: Obtain a medical document from your health care practitioner
The following information must be included on the medical document and signed by your doctor or nurse.
-your full name
-your date of birth
-address of your health care practitioner
-amount in grams of marijuana that you are authorized to use, period of use (i.e how many days, weeks or months?) which cannot exceed one year from date prescription was signed.
-healthcare practitioner’s name and information (profession, license number, province of license, business address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address).
-Attestation from the health care practitioner that the document’s information is legitimate, current and complete.
Step 3: Register and order with a Licensed Producer
After receiving the medical document from your health care practitioner, you can register as a client with one of thirty-nine Licensed Producers across the country. To register, you will need the original medical document. Once you are registered as a client, you will be able to order medicinal marijuana from the Licensed Producer within the limits dictated by your prescription.
Step 4: Shipping of your cannabis for Medical Purposes
Your medicinal marijuana will be sent to you directly from the Licensed Producer. At the present time, neither ACMPR or Health Canada allow Licensed Producers to provide medicinal marijuana through a storefront. The controlled drugs and substances act forbids possession, trafficking, import and export of marijuana unless authorized by regulations.
If you find yourself in a position where you are being questioned about your possession by law enforcement, simply show them the label on the package sent to you by the Licensed Producer, or show them a copy of your actual prescription.
