Do Dabs Smell?
Cannabis is famous for its pungent, distinctive smell. That is why it is often called skunk. Although many connoisseurs prize the herb for its scent — even going so far as to cultivate varieties with different flavour profiles including orange, chocolate, pine, and many more — there are some situations in which a strong smell is not desirable.
Enter the dab. For those who may not know, dabbing is a recent trend in the marijuana-using world. Dabbing is a way to get high off of a concentrated cannabis substance. A dose of this substance is called a dab. The substance is often referred to as wax, shatter, crumble, budder, or, more simply, butane hash oil. The oil is made by extracting THC and other chemicals from cannabis using a solvent like butane or carbon dioxide. Once it is finished, the sticky oil will be between fifty and ninety per cent THC.
The dab is vaporized, not smoked like a joint. It can be used in bongs, water pipes and e-cigarettes. It can also be flash vaporized in a much more flamboyant process: to consume the dab, people may put the oil on a very hot nail and inhale the resulting vapour through a dab rig, which is often a glass, bong-like device. This is typically what people mean when they talk about dabbing.
Dabbers can also apply the oil to a glass surface that has been heated with a miniature blow torch. They will then inhale the large amount of vapour that results. Dabbing produces a more intense and euphoric high than smoking or eating marijuana.
Proponents of dabbing argue that the concentrated nature of dabs means that dabbers can consume the same amount of medicinal ingredients with far less smoke (and, therefore, lung damage,) than if joints had been the preferred method of administration. This process may or may not be less harsh on the lungs, but it is certainly less harsh on the nose.
The vapour that results from dabbing may still smell of marijuana, but it is much less potent than the smoke from a joint or a pipe. This milder smell makes it easy to conceal, so long as the vapour can be expelled into a well-ventilated area free from prying eyes. If you can dab in a private room and blow the vapour out the window, it will smell much less than if you had smoked your weed.
However, dabbing does have its disadvantages when it comes to discretion. Dabbing lasts much less time than other forms of ingesting marijuana. It may be harder to be discreet if you have to take several doses to maintain your high, no matter how little scent the vapour carries. Larger dabs may also smell more strongly.
If you are in need of a way to ingest cannabis that is entirely scent-free, edibles are an excellent option.
