Can I Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online?
In the past, before medical marijuana legalization, individuals would have to purchase marijuana products from illegal dealers, and this is precisely what the Canadian government wants to eliminate. This form of marijuana distribution may grant access to minors, circulate poor quality or possibly tainted marijuana products, and even promote organized crime.
According to the ACMPR (Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations), currently, Canadians that have been authorized to use cannabis by their health care practitioner are allowed reasonable access to cannabis for medical purposes.
This means that those who desire to access safe, quality-controlled cannabis will need the support of a medical practitioner, such as your family doctor. Once this is achieved, the doctor or nurse practitioner will fill out the proper documentation that will allow you to purchase cannabis products for medical use from any licensed producer currently registered with Health Canada. This documentation will outline the dosage appropriate for your condition and will be valid for a maximum of 12 months.
One cannot legally purchase marijuana without this documentation in person or online, but many organizations and networks have popped up to make finding licensed medical professionals that are open to the use of medical marijuana as a form of treatment. This may come in the form of filling out a brief questionnaire and patient application online which will then be reviewed to determine eligibility. Once completed and approved, the process of finding a doctor who you will have to speak to will begin. This may come in the form of a scheduled visit at their clinic, or via a video conference call. You will then have to convince the doctor that your current medical condition will be best treated with the use of medical marijuana.
This is the current system that the Canadian government has put in place and upheld by the law. However, the plan for legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational use was recently announced with a tentative date of July 1st 2018, which may make obtaining a medical marijuana card redundant.
