Prairie Plant Systems Inc. was established in 1988 as a biotechnology company with a focus on research and development. The Prairie Plant Systems Saskatoon facility focused on the development micropropagation protocols and in vitro rooting techniques for the Saskatoon berry tree, but soon evolved to include 29 different varieties of berries and medicinal plant species. In December 2000, Health Canada awarded Prairie Plant Systems Inc. with a license to produce medical cannabis. Since then, they have leveraged decades of experience in agriculture and research to the cultivation of medical cannabis under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR).

Prairie Plant Systems Inc. has grown significantly with the acquisition and development of their subsidiaries, including CanniMed Ltd.
