How Do Cannabinoids Work?

Cannabinoids work by binding to specialized receptors in the brain and other parts of the body.  This binding causes neurons to release different amounts of chemicals, such as dopamine.  Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in parts of the brain that deal with short-term memory, coordination, appetite, and mood.  Some cannabinoid receptors are also found in the immune system, which may be how marijuana helps regulate pain and inflammation.

Does Eating Weed Get You High?

There are two ways to eat weed: raw, or processed into food (weed-infused food is called an ‘edible’). Both methods will get you high, but edibles are much more effective than raw weed. Marijuana releases THC when it is heated, so smoking weed or cooking it into food is the best way to take advantage of THC’s psychoactive properties — otherwise known as getting high. Eating raw weed is not recommended.

Does Weed Help With Depression?

Marijuana has been used to treat depression since the 17th century where it first began in England and India. While THC has been shown to improve mood in low doses on a short-term basis, long-term consumption of higher doses can cause depression. This is particularly true among teens who are at far higher risk of suffering marijuana related depression than their adult counterparts. Symptoms can follow them into adulthood even long after they’ve stopped using the drug.

Can Weed Make You Sick?

Weed may have a reputation as a drug with few or no bad effects, but it can make you sick. Some people experience side effects like vomiting after smoking weed. Weed can also make you sick if it has been mixed with other chemicals, as is sometimes the case with illegal drugs.

Indica is a strain of the marijuana plant. It is known for being more relaxing and physically sedating than the other parent strains; sativa and hybrid. Scientists do not know exactly what causes the difference between their effects. Indica and sativa strands have a different structure and different resin production. Indica is shorter and bushier than sativa. Indica also tends to affect the entire body, as opposed to just the brain.

Does Marijuana Cause Cancer?

Marijuana smoke, like any smoke, is carcinogenic, containing at least 6000 of the same chemicals found in tobacco. Complicating matters, the tendency of weed users to hold smoke in their lungs for longer periods of time increases tar deposits in the respiratory system by up to 400%. Having said this, both THC and CBD in non-smoke form have shown promising results in treating cancerous cells and tumors in rodents. Legality of experimentation remains an obstacle.

How Long Does It Take For Weed To Wear Off?

Weed usually takes two to three hours to wear off when it is smoked. If you eat an edible, the effects will last much longer, typically from four to six hours. Does Smoking Weed Kill Brain Cells?

The idea that Marijuana kills brain cells is unfounded, and dates back to popular anti-drug campaigns of the 70’s and 80’s. Rather, the photo-cannabinoids in cannabis are shown to interact positively with CB1 receptors in the brain’s endocannabinoid system. This has benefits for seizures, Alzheimer’s and cell regeneration. A study done on animals shows that both THC and CBD promote the formation of new healthy cells in the adult brain.

Hybrids then are a mix between indica and sativa genetics. To obtain a card, you must see your healthcare practitioner, qualify for a prescription, and connect with a licensed producer. Your legal documentation (card) will be provided to you by the licensed producer via mail once you complete your first order. A card issued to you by a storefront “dispensary” or “compassion club” does not lawfully protect you if you are in possession of marijuana.

THC rich cannabis can be a very effective sleep inducer and also has the ability to cure sleep apnea. Strains high in CBD, however, have the opposite effect of making one feel energetic. The downsides of cannabis as a sleep aid are its capacity to interfere with REM sleep and the hangover users can feel the next morning, leaving them lethargic and unmotivated. Starting marijuana too early in life can also result in long-term sleep difficulties.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes are fragrant oils found in the resin glands of cannabis. When inhaled, they assist cannabinoids in penetrating the blood-brain barrier and have implications for the production and destruction of both serotonin and dopamine. There are several different kinds of terpenes, each with their own medical benefits. They are useful in treating inflammation, depression, anxiety, suppressing fluids, fighting bacteria and healing wounds. Though promising, legality of testing is an impediment to terpene research.

What Does Hotbox Mean?

Hotboxing is an activity where a user(s) smokes cannabis in an enclosed and unventilated space like a closet, car, shed, or blanket fort. A study at Johns Hopkins confirmed that smoking in this fashion can get users far more intoxicated.  They achieved this by placing non-smokers in the same environment as those who were inhaling the smoke first hand, then measuring the effects that the second hand smoke had on the non-smoking participants.  Some refer to this as a contact high.

Is Cannabis An Antidepressant?

Though there is little conclusive evidence, Cannabis is thought to improve symptoms of depression when patients find the dose and strain that works for them. A dose that is too high can worsen symptoms of depression. Cannabis can stimulate the body’s endocannabinoid system to increase serotonin — some popular antidepressants also function by increasing serotonin levels. Many patients prefer cannabis to antidepressants because it has milder side effects and withdrawal symptoms.
