What Are Edibles?
The traditional way to ingest marijuana is to smoke it by pipe, joint or bong. This form of consumption induces a more immediate effect on the smoker, however it also tends to wear off more quickly. Marijuana edibles take longer to kick in –usually 30 to 60 minutes, but give the taker a much longer lasting high.
Edibles have gained mainstream traction as a viable treatment option to hundreds of symptoms and conditions for a number of reasons. As a starter, the user is not required to inhale cannabis in order to benefit from its effects. This is especially important to patients who may be suffering from conditions such as COPD, asthma or chronic bronchitis. Additionally, edibles serve as a safe and discreet method of consumption.
Why does my high last longer when I use edibles?
The reason why edibles bring a more intense and longer-lasting effect than smoked or vaporized cannabis is that the former introduces cannabinoids (THC, CBD etc) through the gastrointestinal tract. The THC is then metabolized by the liver and is converted into 11-hyroxy-THC, which has more of a psychedelic effect than standard THC. In the latter scenario, as much as 60% of CBD content enters the body through the alveoli and capillaries found in our lungs, however, that percentage quickly drops below 20%, which is the main reason for the short lived “buzz”.
Edibles are perceived to introduce a more relaxed feeling to the taker. The high is more of a “body stoned” experience rather than a “head” high. Hallucination and/or intense visions are not uncommon with edibles. Another advantage of is that it can be consumed discreetly in places where smoking is not allowed.
While “special brownies” are often the first to come to mind when thinking of marijuana edibles, they can actually come in many other forms. Gummies, cakes, slushie, hard candies are just a few examples. Because of their intense effects, many edible products contain only a low dosage of THC(as low as 5mg), enabling prescribers and users to properly control their dosage..
It is recommended that one should start with a low dose and increase it the next time if they see fit. Cannabis-infused drinks begin to work faster than dense products such as brownies. Always be mindful of the delayed onset of edibles. Some users have reported up to a 3 hour delayed reaction to products. Consuming too many edibles can be an unpleasant experience. Edible overdose can lead to paranoia, lack of coordination and other intense sensations. If you feel that you’ve had too much, stay calm, stay hydrated and eat. Should your symptoms not subside, please consult a medical practitioner.
In Canada, it is illegal to possess, sell, or grow marijuana without legal permission from Health Canada. Possession and use of medical marijuana must be authorized by a doctor as a medical treatment. People who have certain health issues can buy a limited amount of marijuana for personal use, and licensed producers can grow and provide medical marijuana to those who need it.
