Medical Marijuana For Mental Illness

Studies continue to show that the psychiatric effects of cannabis may provide the relief that many seek to mental health ailments such as depression, anxiety and PTSD.  While its pharmaceutical counterparts may also provide diversion or reprieve from the symptoms associated with mental illness, they do so at a cost. Side effects may include addiction, restlessness, loss of appetite, hair loss and heart complications.  While marijuana is not without its risks, it can provide similar relief with greatly reduced corollary complications.

How Marijuana Helps

Your body naturally produces endocannabinoids and, as such, has a built-in receptor system for this type of chemical compound: The Endocannabinoid System. In the brain, the ECS is leveraged by the body to regulate pleasure sensory, appetite, mood, short-term memory and coordination.  By stimulating these regions of the brain, neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, are released by neurons. Dopamine can alter several neurological functions within the reward centre of your brain, which can help improve mood, promote sleep or entice your appetite.

Marijuana’s mental effects

There have been countless success stories from around the globe regarding the use of marijuana as medicine.  It is worth noting, however, that those success stories all stem from professionally controlled environments, with strict dosage and strain lineage recommendations.  While marijuana treatment options do exist for symptoms of depression or anxiety, too much of a dose, or pre-existing factors in your family medical history could actually worsen the condition.  Always consult with a health care practitioner, and avoid “self medicating”.
