How Do You Smoke Weed?
If you’re smoking a joint, light one end and inhale from the other. To get the most of your weed, you should inhale the smoke deeply into the lungs. Before exhaling, take another deep breath to make sure that all of that smoke is in your lungs, not your mouth. Smoking weed is more similar to smoking a cigarette than a cigar. There is a persistent myth that weed will have more of an effect the longer you hold the smoke in your lungs. However, your lungs absorb smoke in just a few seconds, so don’t worry about trying to hold your breath as long as possible.
There are many ways to smoke weed. Here are a few:
- Joints: a joint is a hand-rolled marijuana cigarette. Rolling one yourself may take some practice. Dispensaries often sell pre-rolled joints. This is one of the most common ways to smoke weed.
- Blunts: a blunt is a hollowed-out cigar filled with marijuana. Some users say that this method gets in the way of any subtleties in the taste of their marijuana.
- Pipes: marijuana can be smoked in a standard tobacco pipe, or in other styles that are more popular in the weed community (small, colourful glass pipes are popular). Smoking weed from a pipe is often called smoking a ‘bowl.’
- One-hitters: these are small, thin pipes that are designed to store enough weed for a single hit.
- Spliffs: spliffs are cigarettes rolled with both marijuana and tobacco. This allows users to experience the positive (and negative) effects of both weed and tobacco. Note that the terms ‘joint’ and ‘spliff’ are reversed or interchangeable in Europe.
- Vaporizers: vaping is not technically smoking, as vaporizers heat cannabis and vaporize its active ingredients without burning it. This is a good alternative for those who do not want smoke in their lungs, although the high is less intense and lasts for less time.
Smoking marijuana for the first time can be a curious experience. It may even be a person’s first time experiencing psychoactive, or mind-altering, effects. Here are a few tips for first-timers:
- Stock up on supplies. Leaving the comforts of home may be the last thing you want to do after smoking weed for the first time. Before you begin, stock up on snacks, water, music, movies, and anything else you might want.
- Be aware of your mood. Your current mood and mind set will greatly affect your high. If you are not feeling content and confident, you may wish to make a change or to postpone your experience.
Choose a comfortable setting. It’s unlikely that anything disastrous will happen once you smoke weed for the first time (although marijuana has been known to cause or worsen psychosis; people with existing mental health conditions should consult a medical professional or avoid weed entirely), but it is still best to try a new drug in a comfortable, familiar environment surrounded by people you trust. It is especially helpful to have a seasoned pot-smoker around for guidance.
